Jon P. Rebman, Ph.D., is Curator/Chair of Botany at the San Diego Natural History Museum (since 1996) and a plant taxonomist who conducts extensive floristic research in Baja California and in San Diego and Imperial counties. He leads field classes and botanical expeditions and directs the San Diego County Plant Atlas project (sdplantatlas.org).

  • Personal scientific collections: 37,000+ plant specimens

  • iNaturalist: 1,021,100+ plant identifications/verifications supporting regional botanical research

  • SDNHM Herbarium (SD): 292,000+ specimens dating back to the 1870s

After many long years of waiting, Jon Rebman and Annette Winner (a long-term science volunteer in Botany) have published Ferns and Lycophytes of San Diego County. This field guide includes descriptions, identification keys, local natural history information, and a color plate for each species showing key characters used to recognize and distinguish our regional ferns and lycophytes. The book covers 49 species known from San Diego County, plus 17 species that could occur here because they are found just north or south of the county but have not yet been documented locally. This publication is part of the Museum’s journal series, Proceedings of the San Diego Society of Natural History.

July 2025 Anne Murphy brought in a delightful bouquet of nine species of flowering California native plants, and this is just one of those beauties.  She hopes that seeing these lovely specimens will encourage members to plant more natives in their gardens. Photo credit: Karen England.

All you have to do is:

1) Bring a cutting or a potted plant to a meeting.

2) BEFORE you leave home, take a minute to print out a slip of paper with the common and scientific name of the plant, where it is native to (if you know that), what city it is growing in, your name, and a couple of sentences about your experience with the plant.
