A new website offers freely accessible, authoritative information about Katherine Olivia Sessions (1857-1940), a San Diego horticulturist and businesswoman known as “The Mother of Balboa Park.” Biographical information, a detailed timeline of Sessions’ life and annotated lists of published articles are included, along with an inventory of Sessions photographs and guides to archival sources, oral histories and memorials. More content will be added to the site.

The website is populated with two decades of research materials accumulated by historian Nancy Carol Carter, who is the current 2026 Horticulturist of the Year for the San Diego Horticultural Society. “Kate Sessions is not simply a distant figure of San Diego’s past,” Carter says, “her influence and wisdom live on. I am offering this website to increase knowledge of Sessions and to support ongoing research into her productive and impactful Southern California life.”
