An Introduction to the San Diego Natural History Museum Canyoneers with Samantha Barlin
Samantha Barlin is San Diegan born and raised. She grew up hiking the trails locally and fell in love with the nature there. Currently an art director for board games by trade, she joined the Canyoneers as a volunteer in 2022 to get out from behind the desk and back out into the chaparral, introducing other people to the nature she fell in love with.
The Canyoneers are a volunteer arm of the San Diego Natural History Museum, leading free interpretive hikes all over San Diego County. During these hikes the public is introduced to the habitats, flora, and fauna that makes San Diego County one of the most biodiverse places in the world.
Did you know that SDNHM Canyoneers use iNaturalist?
Even though NHM researchers are leading the charge, our work is most effective when community members like you help us out. You can join our efforts:
Make wildlife observations on your phone
Download the iNaturalist app or visit inaturalist.org and make an account.
Join our project by clicking here, or searching “Healthy Canyons Initiative San Diego” on iNaturalist.
Select “Yes” when asked to trust the project (only on desktop). This step is very important!
Observe plants and wildlife by taking quality pictures in your local canyon. You can also make observations within 500 meters (0.3 miles) of your canyon's perimeter.
Upload your observations to iNaturalist, and watch as others help you identify plant and wildlife species.
