IN MEMORIAM: Remembering Yvonne Mao, San Diego Horticultural Society Member And Friend

Yvonne Mao, San Diego Horticultural Society member and friend, died peacefully last night, May 22, with family near her.
Another friend gone too early.
Yes, I feel sad. But not as sad as her Chinese girlfriends who lunched together and celebrated life's ups and mourned its downs for decades. I met them all through the San Diego Horticulture Society.
Yvonne knew plants and found joy in them. We traveled to the Garden Tours together this spring and have shared Dim Sum and celebrations for years with fellow plant friends.
Self-sacrificing. This is one person who truly lived every moment of her life for others.
A well-educated accountant, she spent most of her retirement carefully protecting her mother during COVID years and caring for an ex-husband as well.
To say she was thoughtful does not say enough. At the Garden Walk she had prepared me a lunch with freshly harvested fruits, snack bars, water, all handed to me in a recycled bread bag.
Her level of thrift reminded me of my mother's mother, who would save and reuse everything.
I miss you already, Yvonne.
