The long, hot summer should soon be behind us. For those of us who have been eagerly awaiting the fall planting season, cooler weather cannot come too soon. Fortunately, fall is the time for plant sales in San Diego. We have so many to choose from; large sales with diverse selections, such as those offered by Master Gardeners and the San Diego Botanic Garden, as well as smaller specialized shows and sales put on by plant societies. All of them offer something special for your garden, often at discounted prices. Here’s a list to get you started:
September Shows and Sales
San Diego Iris Society Fall Rhizome Sales: The weekends of September 8-9 and September 15-16 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Casa del Prado, Balboa Park. A large selection of iris, including re-bloomers, available in a variety of colors. Members will be on hand to answer any questions about growing iris.
San Diego Master Gardeners Fall Plant Extravaganza: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 22 at Casa del Prado, Balboa Park. Thousands of plants for sale at amazing prices, along with a marketplace and garden demonstrations. Watch this video to get in the mood.
San Diego Bonzai Club Show and Sale: September 29-30, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Casa del Prado, Room 101, Balboa Park. Amazing bonsai will be on display. Bonsai of various sizes and species, as well as other bonsai-related items will be for sale by club members at attractive prices.
October Shows and Sales
Begonia Society Show and Sale: October 6-7, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM at Casa del Prado, Room 101, Balboa Park.
California Native Plant Society Fall Native Plant Sale: October 13, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 1600 Village Place in Balboa Park. California native plants of just about every description, from grasses to trees and shrubs, perennials to annuals, and even some succulents and ferns.
San Diego Botanic Garden Annual Fall Plant Sale: October 21-22, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Thousands of unique, exotic, unusual, and drought-tolerant plants, as well as California natives, herbs, succulents, annuals, perennials, and more, all at discount prices. This is the largest and most diverse plant sale in San Diego County, with plants donated by over 100 local growers, wholesalers, retail nurseries, and individuals. On Monday, October 23, all remaining items will be half price from 9:00 AM to noon. Watch a video here.
Orchid Society Fall Orchids in the Park Show and Sale: October 27-28 at Casa del Prado, Room 101, Balboa Park. Admission is free and doors open at noon on Saturday and 10:00 AM on Sunday.
November Shows and Sales
Water Conservation Garden’s Autumn Fest and Plant Sale: November 3, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the Garden. Live entertainment, craft vendors, food trucks, plants for sale, and activities for children, as well as Ask the Designer landscape consultations and advice from partner water agencies.
