MONTHLY MEETING: Night at the Fair

Honoring Greg Rubin, Horticulturist of the Year

Join us on Monday, June 11 at the San Diego County Fair Flower and Garden Show stage to honor California native plant landscaper and SDHS 2018 Horticulturist of the Year, Greg Rubin.

Every year since 1996, SDHS has honored an individual for their significant contribution to horticulture in the San Diego area. This year’s honoree, Greg Rubin, is a very special member of the San Diego horticulture community. The owner of California’s Own Native Landscape Design, he is widely recognized as a leader in the field of native plant landscaping, specializing in creating stable, sustainable, ornamental gardens of California natives.

Greg’s interest in native plants dates back to 1985, when he and his brother re-landscaped their parents' property in Chatsworth and a friend recommended using natives. One thing led to the next and in 1993, after a series of native landscape projects for friends and neighbors, he left his career as an aerospace engineer and started a full-time landscaping business. His company has now designed over 700 native landscapes in Southern California.

A tireless promoter and educator on the appropriate use of native plants, Greg is a sought-after public speaker, book author, and a regular contributor to well-known newspapers and magazines. His enthusiasm for natives is always evident in his communications. At the same time, he has an extensive knowledge of the growth habits, landscape uses, and environmental preferences of our native plants. Together, his native landscaping skills and his experience as an educator and communicator have made him an invaluable addition to the horticultural community. You can learn more about Greg in our May newsletter.

Please join us for a fun-filled Night at the Fair as we honor this special horticulturist. In addition to hearing from Greg Rubin, we'll have exclusive access to the San Diego County Fair Flower Garden Show exhibits where we can enjoy the display gardens created by some of our finest local garden professionals.

Doors open at 5:30 PM and presentation begins at 6:00 PM.
