SDHS will share the Sweet Life (featuring California native plants) with fairgoers this year with.

Serendipity: good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries.

Playing on the Fair's tasty theme this year, Garden Show Coordinator Cindy Benoit modified the garden theme to “Enjoy the Sweet Life." In setting up the garden, it has been interesting to see how the different garden exhibitors have interpreted this theme using plants. As I mentioned in my last San Diego County Fair Garden Show Landscape Exhibit update, the focus of this year’s SDHS garden design is using water-wise plants that, once established, will require less maintenance and allow you to “Live the Sweet Life."

Since working on last year’s garden exhibit, California native plants have become my new passion. Thus, it was serendipitous when I discovered that SDHS is celebrating Greg Rubin as the 2018 Horticulturist of the Year for his work with California native plants. This year’s Fair garden contains a charming structure created by SDHS Member and Master Craftsman, William Van Dusen. I have enjoyed watching folks smile as they stop by to see his work and then spend time checking out our garden. I look forward to seeing you at the June 11 meeting, and hope you enjoy this year’s SDHS garden exhibit.
